President of Uruguay to participate in the opening of the XIII Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean

On Tuesday 25 October, the intergovernmental meeting in Montevideo will be opened by President Tabaré Vázquez, together with other high-level authorities of Uruguay and representatives of United Nations agencies.

The thirteenth session of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean will be opened in Montevideo, Uruguay, at 4.30 pm on Tuesday 25 October 2016. The opening ceremony will be attended by the President of Uruguay, Tabaré Vázquez; the Minister of Social Development, Marina Arismendi; and the Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Alicia Bárcena. Immediately thereafter, the Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Babatunde Osotimehin; and the Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-Women), Lakshmi Puri, will give special statements.

The Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean is a subsidiary body of ECLAC. Its sessions, which are convened on a regular basis, are attended by representatives of governments, civil society and international agencies and serve to assess fulfilment of the commitments made on gender equality and women’s empowerment in the region.

The thirteenth session of the Regional Conference, taking place from Tuesday 25 to Friday 28 at the Radisson Montevideo-Victoria Plaza Hotel, is expected to adopt the Montevideo Strategy for effective implementation of the Regional Gender Agenda in the framework of the new 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

After the opening session, Alicia Bárcena, Executive Secretary of ECLAC, will present the position document entitled Equality and women’s autonomy in the sustainable development agenda, followed by comments from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay, Rodolfo Nin Novoa.

The thirteenth session of the Regional Conference is organized by ECLAC and the Government of Uruguay, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Women’s Institute. A series of thematic panels and roundtable discussions will be held over the course of the four-day event. There will also be a number of side events organized by United Nations agencies and civil society organizations.

The event will be attended by Ministers and high-level authorities from countries of the region, including Argentina, Barbados, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.
