The care society – Video of the XV Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean
This video was prepared within the framework of the XV Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean, whose theme is "The care society: a horizon for sustainable recovery with gender equality", and will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from November 7 to 11.
The Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean is the United Nations' main intergovernmental forum on women's rights and gender equality in the region. It is organized by ECLAC, as Secretariat of the Conference and, since 2020, in coordination with UN Women. The forum is celebrating its 45th anniversary and has a broad participation of governments, the United Nations system and civil society organizations, particularly women's and feminist movements. Throughout the various meetings of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean, the governments of the region have made commitments aimed at overcoming the structural challenges of inequality through public policies that guarantee women's rights and contribute to the achievement of women's physical, economic and decision-making autonomy.
They have also made commitments to achieve gender equality in legal frameworks and in the results of policy implementation, i.e., to achieve formal and substantive equality. The care society is a horizon that involves a collective and multidimensional construction to address the structural challenges of gender inequality and place the care of people and the planet at the centre of sustainable development. This is what the care society is all about: a proposal for social organization that places the sustainability of life as a priority objective.
This requires recognizing the right to care, which implies guaranteeing the right of each person in the three dimensions of the concept (caring, being cared for and self-care), recognizing the value of care work and guaranteeing the rights of those who provide care. It also implies overcoming the stereotyped assignment of care as the responsibility of women and advancing in the co-responsibility in the provision of care between men and women, as well as between the State, markets, communities and families.
